What happens to tinned and dry pet food that has past its expiry date?
I'm hoping that supermarkets are donating it to the various animal shelters and private kennels and not just throwing it away.

If they're not giving it to the shelters maybe it's the case that they need to be asked for it by the volunteers, or at worse, could it be sold off at very low prices. And could the veterinary clinics that sell pet food be asked the same question about their out-of-date food.

Just a thought

great idea. but do shops or vet clinics actually get any out of date stuff. all i buy has sell by date of at least a years time.

maybe could give damaged bags of dry food which often happens

Thanks madmum, I take your point about long expiry dates on food, when I was buying food for my own little dog (sadly no longer with us) I looked at sell by dates but it probably didn't register how long they were at the time.
I asked the question because I find it so upsetting to read time after time the various rescue shelters asking for donations - food, money etc and at least some free or cheaper food would help.

Good idea about the damaged bags of dry food.

Not out of date, but today Litsas had 390gr tins of Whiskas for just 69 cents each. Very Happy

ARGOS receive lots of out of date tins and dried dog and cat food, and AlphaMega supply them with offcuts of cheese and meat.

As AlphaMega do this it may well be that the "competitors" Metro,Sklavenitis,Lidl etc would do the same if approached by the shelters, if only to earn themselves brownie points and flag their name up as a "caring" supermarket. And even AlphaMega may be amenable to helping other shelters if they were asked.

I had seen mention of AlphaMega's donations on Argos' Facebook page a while ago and photos of the van delivering it - top marks to AlphaMega!
