I had a call from Primetel last week to say I would be getting a visit today from an engineer to work on the phone line.
He wasn't too good at conveying the purpose but what he's basically done is to run a new tels cable out from the bottom of the phone junction box to the Router. Separating the two and apparently obviating the need to plug it into the same socket as the phone, via a surge filter (which he says are no longer required).
I got the impression that everybody was going to get this work done eventually.
I did happen to ask what the situation is regarding line speed and he tells me that it should now be possible to move to their max of 50mbs if desired. Not bad for a village line but possibly a bit OTT I am thinking.
We had a few problems with Primetel in early December. I reported it in the evening, they came out next day and gave us a new router and carried out the work you described.
Also advised us to get an electrician in to change the cabling from junction box to where phone cable comes into house. I suppose we could do that, if we managed to pick the lock.
For some odd reason the CYTA line enters our house in one of the upstairs, spare bedrooms. On all of my Primetel engineer visits they have said that if I got an electrician to run a line direct from the box (top of drive) into the living room socket it would be a much better signal.
I have got a key!
I confess, I just got back from the Primetel office where I have opted for an upgrade to 50Mbs. Well, it's just a few packets of fags a week - that I don't smoke.
Up to 10 days to get it going. I hope it's "as advertised".
