Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore died today aged 89, a group of his friends and staff said.

The broadcaster "passed away peacefully at 12.25pm this afternoon", at his home in Selsey, West Sussex, they said in a statement:

After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home, Farthings, where he today passed on, in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy.

I saw him once on the underground - complete with monocle. I believe his 'The Sky at Night' was the longest running TV program.

A sad loss.

He holds the record as the longest serving host of a TV programme - I understand he appeared on every 'Sky at Night' except one. He was self-taught in astronomy, served in the RAF as navigator in WW II, self-taught violinist (once performing with Albert Einstein on vioin) and xylophonist, on which he performed at a Royal Command Performance, and composed for both instruments. He published over 1,000 books, all written on his pre-WW I (sic) typewriter.

RIP, Sir Patrick.

I still have a book of his from back in the 50s. Along with other influences at the time it has ensured my abiding interest in matters, space ever since - both factual and fantasy.

He was a quirky old guy but he had the gift of firing the imagination. RIP, and thank you.

The world is a little sadder today, he was 1 of those people that always made you listen, even if you had no idea or interest in his subject. They just aint around any more. He will be missed by millions of people.
R.I.P. Patrick

Reading a 'Sky at Night" site today and he mentions having met (amongst others, of course) the first man to fly in a heavier-than-air machine, Orville Wright, the first man & woman into space, Yuri Gagarin & Valentina Tereshkova, and the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong. Shocked

And when he won a BAFTA Buzz Aldrin flew over to the UK to present it to him.
