My girlfriend is a clinical psychologist working in the NHS in England at present we wondered what the scope would be for setting up a psychology/counselling practice in Cyprus aimed primarily to the ex-pat community?

I have a background in CBT and this was something I considered after we moved here.

After giving some consideration I decided that the problems were too great, e.g. referrals to service and referrals on if required, clinical supervision (and cost of supervision), insurance, registration in Cyprus, premises/facilities, FTA (and other) policies, secretarial support, updating/training. No doubt everything your girlfriend will have considered.

Would also need acceptance by local insurance companies for treating those with health insurance, and they already have their lists.

Admittedly I didn't have any great incentive to overcome these problems - I took early retirement from the NHS on full pension so don't need to make a living.

In 2005 the law was introduced to register psychologists - if your girlfriend trained in recent years she'll be more than adequately qualified for the register (3 year bachelor degree in psychology, 2 year masters followed by 1500 hours supervised practice). Unfortunately it's not that easy - those that did not meet requirements but had previously been practising weren't happy and set up an alternative organisation, and have been accepting people with a bachelor's degree as members and are lobbying to amend the law.

I understand that, at the moment, there are no psychologists in any MDT in Cyprus.

Cyprus is not part of the EuroPsy initiative.
