My son who is training to become a PADI Dive Master is Dyslexic.
For him to be given extra help with the reading of the questions and writing the answers he needs to have a certficate from a doctor/specialist.
Can anyone help to point me in the right direction?

My son had Band C funding at school, D being the highest.
PADI require that to have dispensation during the dive tests/exams that he has a certificate/assesment which is less than one year old.

We have a friend in Pissouri who works with Dyslexic people, she used to teach at special needs schools. If you want I could ask her advice, or give her your email.

My husband is also Dyslexic but he became a padi dive master here in Cyprus 2 years ago, he wasn't asked for special certificates to enable him to pass this course, he had a very understanding instructor who helped him with his reading/writing difficulties. Without his understanding and patience my husband would not have passed this course, he also went on to do many speciality courses and is now considering taking his Instructor course soon. Cool
I would suggest your son contacts other dive centres to ask if they consider his dyslexia to be a problem for him to take his dive master course? Confused Maybe your son could take this course later in the season when the dive schools are less busy and maybe he could find an instructor who would be able to give him one on one tuition?
Good luck.

Hi 'Bloomer'
Thanyou for your reply
My son Robert is at Easy Divers in Protaras
Joey Ridge the owner and Dora have been wonderful helping and working with Robbie, he is now in his 3rd season.
Originally Robbie was only training to be Master Scuba Diver, but Joey and Lee have encouraged him to attempt his Dive master exams.
PADI insist that for Robbie to have help reading the questions and writing the answers that he will need a certificate/letter from a professional person that is within the last year. He had special dispensation at school in the UK.
Would it be possible Robbie to meet your husband as the seem to have a lot in common

hi john

i have looked on the padi website and this is what it states:

Prerequisites
To take this course, you must be:

18 years old
A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization)
A PADI Rescue Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization)
An Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (or qualifying first aid and CPR training from another organization) course completion within the past 24 months.
Have at least 20 dives to begin the course and 60 for certification
Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement (PDF) signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

No mention that a certificate required if you have reading/writing difficulties??

Hi hatzyian
Thankyou for putting me in contact with Barbara
If Robert needs an assessment then I am sure that she is qualified enough to satisfy PADI's requirements.

Regards

Hi Bloomer
Just recieved this information

Padi General Standards & Procedures, page 24

Examination Policy for Students
with Learning Disabilities

Although it is preferable for student divers to read exam questions and answers independently, provisions may be made during written examinations for students who have learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.

These provisions may include, but are not limited to, the use of reading aids, reading out loud, or having someone read the questions and multiple choice answers to the student.

If a student diver needs special accommodations, ask for a letter from
a credential health care practitioner (medical doctor, psychologist, etc.)
stating that the diver has been diagnosed with a learning disability.

It is recommended that you keep the letter in the student diverís record file.

The goal is to provide students with a testing environment that remains
objective while allowing them to clearly understand the questions and possible answers. Choosing an examination method that best suits each student is left to the instructorís and studentís discretion

Regards

JOHN
