I've just re-read the article slowly and am beginning to realise just how easy it is to persuade ordinary people to do things they would not otherwise do. It makes it easier to understand the resilience of Trump's base of followers and, perhaps a bit less loudly, the followers of other politicians or movements. It explains the reluctance of people to change their opinions, because the easy path is to follow a road laid out for them rather than to think for themselves. In the article, to 'be sent to the library' was the punishment for those who thought for themselves.
