I brought my car over from the UK towards the end of summer and I registered it as a temporary import for three months. I then got another extension for three months. The nature of my employment means it's quite fluid and I might be here one year, three years or five years. The customs officer told me when I took the three month extension if I return with an employment contract for example up until Summer 2019 I could then get another extension and keep the car on British plates for as long as the contract is without paying any charges.

I won't have the contract by the approaching deadline but I might have it at the end of January. Obviously my ideal situation in a perfect world would be to keep the car on British plates and not pay any fees. I believe you have to inform DVLA post 12 months.

So other than paying the import fees and changing onto Cypriot plates as the deadline hits, do I have any other options? Can I keep the car on private property and not drive it until I either have the appropriate contract for temporary import or decide to pay the import fees and change the plates?

you can put it into a bonded warehouse that is your only option without registering it.

Hi John. With the potential of rising emissions costs with new proposed law. Id register the car here in Cyprus. On the basis that if you want to sell it if you leave Cyprus it will be much easier than if it has the new proposed higher road tax fees.

Registering the car is 150 plus, mot I think is approx 32-35 euros for two years and 20 to get the new number plates supplied and fitted, and then road tax.

Plus what ever the import duty fees are.

Second hand Car prices are quite high in Cyprus so if you sold youd recoup most if not all the costs.
