We need a credit card, as most hotels, car hires etc require this as security.
I think to get one from our bank here (Hellenic), they will block off a sum of money from out account before issue.
Our UK bank (Halifax) only deal with U.K. residents.
Any ideas of alternatives would be welcome.

We use debit cards, issued by Hellenic, as they don't issue credit cards to anybody over 70, and have had no problems with hotels, car hire, restaurants both here and in the UK.

They don't require a deposit with the bank.

I have a Hellenic credit card (and a debit card) and I'm 86, so where did this 'fake news' originate?

Than you Kwacka. We also have had no problems, but got our new Platinum Mastercards today and they clearly state it is a debit card unlike before.
The hotel I stayed in the UK wanted a credit card and Ive heard of friends that gave been refused car hire without a credit card - hence the need!

Devil, how much deposit did you need for the Hellenic credit card?
Our previous card was considered a 'credit' card, although never used as one, always a debit card.
Just worries me that the new card actually states 'Debit'.

Most Car hire companies WILL accept a debit card despite what it says in their terms and conditions

I looked at BOC to get credit card and said there has to be at least the same amount in your bank account as your cards credit limit.

My son informed me that he always hires in Cyprus using a debit card and never had a problem. He always has enough in his account to cover the amount required for hire.
I've always used a UK credit card.

It originated from our branch manager who told Mrs K this when she wanted her credit card updated. She was told that he couldn't even get a credit card for his father.
