On 1st.January this year I lost my first neighbour and friend to lung cancer.Dave never smoked, drank in moderation and enjoyed what he thought was a healthy life.He died after just three months of illness and his widow and good friend of my missus faced getting him home for burial etc.etc. He died in Nicosia Hospital.
I have asked her permission to post this for everyones information as some of us may have to face the same trial sooner or later.
The day after he died she got in touch with the British Embassy in Nicosia and literally from that moment on everything moved like clockwork. They put her in touch with Othello Health Services in Nicosia
Tel.22442600 who met her at the hospital mortuary the next day. They(the undertakers) asked for Dave's passport and name of funeral director in their hometown in Lancashire. They moved Dave to their own premises and arranged everything from then on.They kept in touch with his wife at every step and told her flight times etc.Next thing she knew she got a call from the funeral people in UK saying they had received Dave and it was one of the most professional jobs they had seen.It took three weeks to get him back to UK.His wife said that he looked exactly the same as he had done the last time she saw him in Cyprus.Total cost including 10 copies of death certificate, flight and admin was 3,588 euros. That works out at 3,000 Cyprus pounds or approx.3,500 stg.
I have absolutely no connection with Othello but my friends wife was so impressed with them I had to share the info with you all.
RIP Dave - I will always remember the tuna fishing trip!!
Many thanks for posting the information - as you say a sad subject but one
no doubt that well be helpful to others. If you don't mind I would like to
move it to the FAQ after a while so that it can be found easier for others
who find themselves in this situation.
Sorry to hear about your friend and condolences to the family.
I know what some people are like for detail!! My figures are as per the heading "Repatriation" I do not take account of what happens when you get back to UK.My own experience was about 1300 pounds sterling for a simple cremation and about 2000 sterling for a simple funeral.
On a jovial note, when my time comes I won't be worrying about it but it will crease me as to how much it cost me (my estate)
Just thought i would update this posting for those that might need the info.
We just used Othello's services for repatriation of my fil, they collected him the morning after he passed away and did everything from there. He passed away on a Monday night and was flown back to the UK on the Friday. The cost was €4300 and that included everything this side, might be worth noting that the coffin was not suitable for cremation and had to be changed in the UK. Costs in Uk £2000. Othellos were great, very nice and very helpful, would recommend them without hesitation.
Hope this saves someone having to do the legwork, if you want to know anything else then please feel free to ask.
Thanks goes to Campbell - without his original post we would have found it harder, when the time came i just remembered having read it. Thanks x
I have taken out a funeral plan in Paphos and it costs just under €8000 for repatriation and cremation in the UK and includes all funeral expenses here in Cyprus and in the UK. I had already paid for a cremation plot years ago so that may be extra
I recently read a post by a funeral director in Paphos that it cost €5000 for a body to be repatriated to the UK, then cremated and the ashes returned to Cyprus.
