I am looking for an Opthmologist (eye doctor) in the Larnaca area - somone who would inspire confidence to a former UK resident used to UK professionals. Can you recommend anyone?

Thanks,
Marc

Hi Marc

I worked at a contact lens lab here in England for 19 years, you get to know the 'fussy' opticians who would demand the best and would want everything spot on.

We had several opticians from Cyprus, they used to come over and visit where the lenses were made. I do not know if they have one in Larnaca but Theophanides is a good company to go with. They are a group rather than an individual...

Regards
Richard

Richard,

Thanks for the information - that will be a good start. I will find a Yellow Pages for Larnaca and see if they have a branch in the city.

Regards,
Marc

Jim,

We have not found an ophthalmologist but we have become "experts" on the
opticians in Larnaca.

Basically, one needs to be careful in choosing an optician. We were told
that some opticians would not be licenced if they were applying today. One
optician suggested that some opticians may not even be qualified although I
cannot verify this.

Our first experience was alarming. We went to Nicos Nicolaides where my
wife was given a rushed and minimal sight test and told that her right eye
had not changed. As her glasses were 4 years old, she thought this unlikely
and decided not to proceed. The lady who did the eye test claimed to have
been trained in England.

It transpired from the two sight tests at the opticians below that my wife's
right eye had changed a great deal, much more than the left eye, possibly
due to a change in astigmatism!

Next, we went to Iris at 92 Zenonos Kitieos St, again in Larnaca town
centre. The optician here Kika Protopapa, is UK trained. We were both
given very thorough sight tests lasting 25 minutes each which were up to UK
standards. Kika is a dedicated optician who enjoys her job and we would
definitely recommend her.

Thirdly, my wife had a sight test at Theofanides, 15-17, Grigori Afxentiou
(up from the police station). The sight test was not quite as thorough as
at Iris but probably ok. The quality of lenses is higher than at some other
Cypriot opticians - ie, they supply a well known international make of lens
which is lighter and thinner than some. I would be happy to go back to
them.

Hope this helps.

There is a Russian trained ophthalmologist in Larnaca whom I saw last yearI. Varianos? some such name. He is a one man show, plus secretary, and his surgery is near Debenhams, Larnaca. his fees are reasonable. Otherwise, there is the eye clinic in Limassol where, even with an appt,, expect to wait over 2 hours! but the chap there is excellent. Dr Potamidis or similar. PANTHEO EYE CLINIC
