Hi Nigel hope you you or any other forum member can answer my query. I went to jumbo last week and bought some tiles, I paid just under Ä50 cash for them. After a few days I realised they were not suitable for the job I wanted them for so took them back. I was told I couldnít get my money back but they could issue me with a credit note. I told them that was fine as I can always find something to buy in the store. I was then told I had to spend the Ä50 that same day. I was completely shocked at this reply. I ended up bringing the tiles home with me as I didnít have time to look around the shop to spend the money. I rang up their head office today and was informed that this was their policy and they have been trading in this way for over 10 years. Is this legal what theyíre doing I personally didnít think they would be allowed to do this.

EU law is on Jumbo's side - you entered into a contract with them and you have no right to cancel that contract. To offer you a credit nore (even with their restrictions) is a gesture of goodwill from them.

However, if you buy something online, over the phone, etc. you have a 14 day 'cooling off' period when you can cancel the order and return goods.

Quote:
If you buy goods in a shop, you have no EU legal right to return the goods (for exchange or refund) unless the item is faulty. However, many shops voluntarily allow customers to return or exchange goods during a certain time period, provided you have the receipt. Check your receipt or the returns policy of the shop where you made your purchase for more information.
