The Air Operations Wing at RAF Akrotiri and the crew of 84 Squadron were
called into action last Friday to deal with fire-fighting activities and a
potential search and rescue operation in the Episkopi area.
The two real-life scenarios served as a reminder of the multiple tasks that
BFC units have to deal with daily and although the search and rescue
operation was eventually not required, it was yet another example of the Air
Ops team working successfully with colleagues from the Republic of Cyprus.

I used to get involved quite a bit in this stuff, back in the late 90s. Then, the ROC had no Rescue Coordination Centre of its own, so we were “it” in the Episkopi HQ. We did have a very good relationship with CYPOL, particularly the helicopter guys, and there were several joint rescue operations. We also did all the airborne fire fighting, with the then 84 Sqn Wessex helicopters at Akrotiri carrying “Rainmaker” buckets.
