I've been hoping to bring a used car to Cyprus this year. I know the Brexit thing may change any import duty but the Road Tax worries me more as its on-going.
I understand the part relating to emissions.
The part of it based upon the age of the car confuses me. The information says that a petrol car up to two years old when registered in Cyprus will pay nothing extra as an age related portion of road tax.
What happens the next year and the year after?
If it goes up each year as the car gets older, quite quickly I wouldn't be able to afford to tax it! Is that what will happen or are they adding that portion of road tax once and its fixed thereafter?
I wish there was somewhere where it was clearly set-out.
I think you may be been reading the proposed law that they wanted to introduce. The R.T is based on emissions not age. So far the law has not beed voted through and I doubt it will be having any affect this year. Even if it were voted it would only affect first registration cars. i.e., cars brought imported and registered for the first time.
You can check what duty you may need to pay using the Govs web link (sorry don't have it to hand). If you get the car in before the passing of the law you will only be subject to the current rules.
In any case, if they did increase annually, then the local people wouldn't be able to pay either!!!

Thanks everyone for taking the time to help, I didn't realise the law hadn't gone through yet. The way its been reported suggests it was passed in December.
The information on the Gov website doesn't say that there is a wait until it's implemented.
The crazy thing is it reads as if I can stick with my current car, a 20+ year old 2 litre Nissan (which must be high polluting by now) and retain a reasonable road tax rate but if I bring in a 4 year-old car with a cleaner, smaller engine I'll get taxed highly!.
The plan would be to buy one here in the next month, stick it in a container and go through the registration process as soon as I can in Cyprus....do you think I could do that still under the old rules?
I don't want a nasty surprise once the thing is sitting on the dock : (
Location: Shropshire/Staffordshire/Cheshire (UK) and Tala (Paphos) sometimes!
We bought an HRV over in 2013
On the day it 'landed' they changed the 'import duty' rules.
Before the duty on 'under 1600cc' (HRV is 1599?) was the lowest
After, the duty was based on emissions (HRV is high)
At the customs office they gave me the option of using the new or old duty rules as the car was already en-route.
The old duty was about €350 ... the new was about €3000
The new rules aren't so bad...the only thing for me is that I would rather buy a slightly older high spec, low mileage car. As it is, the age is going to make road tax too expensive so I'm now looking for newer more basic models : (
