On this subject can anyone help with what the causes of internal dampness/mould are. I have a top floor apartment and the two bedroom walls are getting covered in brown dampness. It's a rented apartment, and I sometimes use aircon for heating and it seems like the ventilation around the apartment is good.

Hi John10,

If the mould is in a specific place this would suggest a leak. If it is spread over the walls then almost certainly it is caused by condensation. The walls here are solid and usually no insulation so the surface gets cold at night and the warm air inside causes moisture to form followed by the mould. People's breath emits loads of moisture.

We ventilate our place every day when the sun is out and also have a dehumidifier which takes gallons of water from the air. We use that at night with the windows shut.

You will have to kill the mould and redecorate once you solve the damp issue.
Paul.

Thanks Paul.

We initially expected a leak but with it spreading elsewhere it's obviously a building issue. The landlord is going to sort it out once we kill the mould.

Dehumidifier is the best option to help reduce the damp/ moisture from your apartment. We have ours on, day and night and dehumidifier boxes in the draws and wardrobes, they are regularly filling up.

As previously said the solid walls are cold and warm air hits them and damp followed by mound occurs.

Unless properties are insulated on the interior or exteriors itís a yearly occurrence.

Regards Steve

Just remember the dark mould that builds up in a dwelling house can be very harmful to peoples health and cause many medical problems due to breathing in the spores, etc.

After changing aluminium window frames to Plastic some years ago our north facing bedroom suddenly sprouted black mould on the outside wall and parts of the ceiling. The plastic cut out any air circulation which used to happen with the leaky old metal frames.

I fitted an air vent with a slide closer to defeat the draught when the North wind is gale force.

It did the trick, never had any mould in the bedroom but this winter we have had to wipe down the en-suite this cold wet december/jan as condensation on the tiles and frames had started to encourage mould.
