Cypriot arrested in north for taking part in protest in south

A female Cypriot citizen was arrested by authorities in the north for
participating in a protest in the state-controlled areas against the Turkish
invasion of Syria’s Afrin province, reports said on Tuesday.

According to CyBC, this is the first time that a citizen of another country was
arrested in the north for taking part in an ‘incident’ in the south.

The woman was arrested on Sunday after she tried to cross to the north at the
Ayios Dometios checkpoint. She was then taken by authorities for questioning,
where she was shown pictures of herself protesting at a... [

Which other country was this woman a citizen of ? I thought she was a Cypriot citizen who has been arrested in the nothern part of the Island .
Wondef why she was trying to go north if she dislikes the regime so much . Smells fishy

Even more reason why she shouldn't have gone over the north.

In the first newspaper report it did say she was a Cypriot citizen .
As mouse says , all the more reason she surely would not want to visit

gives the background to the protest.

Basically, the Syrian army withdrew from the (mainly) Kurdish town of Afrin in n. Syria at the star of the civil war in Syria. A Kurdish protection force took over the defense of the town.

In 2014 the area declared itself an independent state. For some reason the Turks were unhappy with having a de facto state next to it, and in 2014 commenced bombing and sent in the army who took the town and set up a puppet council to run it. This has resulted in protests around the world, including the one attended by the woman mentioned - a Syrian refugee (I assumed a Kurd) who is now resident in the north.

She was caught carrying a picture of the man Erdogan blames for the reported Turkish coup a couple of years ago, and she had also trod on a picture of Erdogan!

I would not normally do this but p##### off with the nit picking on this forum.
Does it or does it not say " a female Cypriot citizen was arrested "
It then goes on to say " this is the first time that a citizen of another country has been arrested "
Where the hell does it mention Syria in this article ?
Your mistake not mine , so why the put down ?

You need to calm yourself down.

I originally posted an article from the Cyprus Mail.

You asked:

"Don't understand this item. Which other country was this woman a citizen of ?"

I searched and posted a link to another article with further info from In-Cyprus for you.

You then stated:
"In the first newspaper report it did say she was a Cypriot citizen"

I pointed out that both articles state she is a Cypriot citizen.

It's not nitpicking not a put down and not a mistake - it is responding to your
comments.

Cheers

The fact that she is a Cypriot citizen was not in question . The fact that she was and was then referred to as a foreign citizen was the problem and you know it
To be told to calm down when one is rightly annoyed is patronising to say the least
Not what one would expect from the owner of the forum .
I am annoyed because you have tried to make me look foolish .....foolish I am not

She wasn't referred to as a foreign citizen instead it stated "this is the first
time that a citizen of another country was arrested in the north for taking part
in an ‘incident’ in the south." No doubt this will be classed a me nit picking Rolling Eyes

Nor is it very pleasant to be told you are nit picking, having a go, are
patronising or have made a mistake when you are trying to be helpful.

I haven't tried to do anything of the sort - if that's your perception of it
then that's down to you.

Perhaps we can move on and discuss the topic in hand - you know the
arrest of a citizen in the north for protesting in the south.

Maybe this lady thought that she could demonstrate more meaningfully by going to the north.... the heart of the beast. Idealistic maybe.
