As far as I am aware you can use one - it's a bit of a grey area (suprised?) but
metal detectors are not allowed within 500 metres of a ancient site. Also as
I see it if it is to discover antiquities then it's a no no but if it is for use on a
beach then I think you should be ok - saw a bloke just last week near Fig Tree
Bay using one late evening.

You will need a license from the Department of Antiquities and the areas where you can detect are strictly limited - so the chances of finding anything are very low.

You can find a copy of the latest amendments to the law (in English) at
