I know a family that we’re stopped at the SBA checkpoint at Ay Nik a couple of years ago, and were given a hefty fine, they had @ four suit cases full of tobacco and cigarettes.

Very long queues at the crossing this morning. ROC registered vehicles taking advantage of lower prices in the north. At the Ay Nik crossing it went back to the first island. City Mall was packed with happy shoppers. The rate as it stands is unsustainable but in the meantime............

As a reformed smoker I have no sympathy with people who are stupid enough to smoke/get caught smuggling.

Well, now that bc has, in a previous thread, finally nailed his colours to the mast in declaring his pleasure at the demise of the Lira, he must be absolutely delighted to hear that so many are going 'across' to benefit from the much lower prices there! Cool

As for your comment, "I have no sympathy with people who are stupid enough to smoke/get caught smuggling", you perfectly illustrate what I was saying in my previous post! Smile (Although someone(!!) mysteriously managed to classify my remark as a "swerve"!! Confused Laughing)

Many people have been nicked by the ROC Police after buying Tobacco/Ciggs from Pyla and bringing them into the ROC, the Police seem to know whos buying ciggs, must have someone watching the place.

Thats if you can get the Cypol out of the coffee shop just outside Pyla, but go out via the SBA,almost no chance of getting caught, not to mention the Hundreds of Greek Cyps who frequent the 12 Casinos every day.

Im sure the ROC Police know all the scams etc even if you exit through the SBAs you will still have to come back on the Republic roads.

Not true, there are always RoC registered vehicles driven by GC`s when we go over, as well as expats. My neighbour who is a seamstress and is Cypriot goes over there to the warehouse for her material. Anyone bringing back anything over the allowed limit are stupid and deserve to be caught.

Mixed feelings on this one so interested in others opinions.
the third party insurance is now 180 euros p.a. approx. double what it used to be.
The cost of petrol however is approx half what it is here.
Living relatively close to Ag. Nik just popping over for petrol would make sense but why do I still not want to?
Get on reallywell with many with both views (i.e.Beautiful beaches, cheap petrol/illegaity etc) c0ompairing say Famagusta to ROC.

Well today at thecrosssing point the queues were approx.30 minutes so made Litsas seem a good alternative even at their prices.

Agree, always far more GC's crossing than Brits.
