A banana is not a true tree, it is more like a rhizome. The growing banana shoot is a sappy soft shoot which grows to a height of 3 to 5 metres and then produces a single head of bananas which can give 50 to 100 individual fruit.

The plant needs a good fertilizer to help it develop.

As the plant matures side shoots will appear from the bottom.

Once the head of bananas has matured the shoot should be cut off and discarded.

Side shoots will then develop, restrict the growth of too many shoots by cutting out the side shoots and transplant them. Chop them out with a spade they will shoot quickly.

If your banana produces a lot of fruit the branch may need to be supported by a sturdy post as the weight of fruit can break the stem. The plants will withstand strong sun but can be broken if in a open position exposed to the wind.

I have grown many varieties of Banana both here and in Sri Lanka. A feeding system which I discovered involved a composting bucket alongside the plant. Kitchen peelings etc are added to the container and this feeds the plant.

Most banana plants are propagated by taking off side shoots, they should be harvested when they are about a metre high and after the main shoot has fruited.

I grew around 60 plants from cut side shoots and quickly developed a small plantation, most of the shoots were given to me.

Bananas like well drained soil, they do not like to be waterlogged.
