I've had an ExtremeTec HTPC Media Player (known as "the box") for a couple of years now.

It came with the Linux OS, OpenElec 6 and Kodi 15.2 loaded.

It's been working fine but with the demise of NTV I've been looking at other options. A lot of them seem to require that a PVR is installed on the box and that the TV option is switched on.

I tried to set up the TV option but each time I got a warning message to say that PVR IPTV Simple Client wasn't installed. I did a web search on this a found two things.
One : that following the warning I should have received a number of options for installing this client. I didn't and nowhere within Kodi could I find the method of installing it.
Two : It appears that Kodi 15.2 doesn't have this option anyway.

Further searches indicated that I needed to update Kodi to a later version. I went to the OpenElec web site and download the latest version from there and followed their instructions for updating the system.
I managed to access the box through my network and placed the download file in the Update folder. I restarted the box as instructed and the system found the update file and started to install it.
At the end the box restarted and the OpenElec splash screen displayed but instead of the Kodi screen loading I got a small menu at the top left of the screen titled "Android system recovery <3e>" which seemed strange as the box is running Linux. I dug out the "manual" for the box and that says if you get problems to carry out a factory reset which I did but that just put me back at the recovery menu. It also said to "wipe data/factory rest" and "wipe cache partition" and reboot which I did but still ended up back at the same menu. I am unable to get out of it.
One of the options on the menu is to "apply update from EXT" which gives the option to "Update from SDcard". I've only got an SDXC card which might be too modern for the box. Also I don't know which file I need to load onto it.

Any help please or do I bin the box? If I need to get another one I would rather go for a Kodi system than a MAG box but I don't know if they are available here.
