A tragedy. Ten. Sad

Sadly, these things sometimes happen though. In 1990 a close friend of mine went to his GP with flu symptoms and a bad headache, aggravated by light. After what must have been a cursory examination he was sent home to bed with some paracetamol. It was meningitis and he was dead before the next dawn, leaving behind a young wife and 2 year old daughter. Sad

There are no good funerals of course but his was as bad as they come.

Canīt they do surgery like this in Larnaca? Chances are it was a case of intracranial bleeding. In such a case is there no helicopter transport available to save precious time? Are there no private hospitals with a neurosurgical departement in the Larnaca area?

They should be able to do most things in most hospitals.
When the new Famagusta hospital was built this was the promise.
Now you feel if it is anything that demands expertise you have to travel at least as far as Larnaca. They have equipment in the Famagusta hospital which hasn't been unwrapped all these years after the opening.
The sooner the national health service is adopted the better

May I ask again: is there no helicopter transport available in Cyprus for urgent cases?

Medivac by helicopter, not yet, not a good country to have any serious health problems, you do take a chance living here I feel.

I think the police service does offer some form of cover but never seen them working here.

You could try this link.

Indeed, sounds thirdworlish. In the case of that 10 yo it could have made the difference between life and death. Or think of other time-critical situations like e.g. someone having a heart attack or a stroke in one of those mountain villages. How long will it take emergency services to get there by ambulance and take the patient to a properly equipped hospital?

Jeba hello, we did think hard about living up in the hills or where we now live, five minutes to Pafos General Hospital, anyone moving to Cyprus should always take this into account I feel.

I always recommend if an emergency should occur if you live in an out of town situation then if you can drive yourself or get a friend to get you to the Hospital, for sure it would be much faster.

We do have privately run Ambulance service's that some use, but it may be lifesaving to get yourself there if possible, not a very cheery thread this but an important one for ex-pats who live here.
