Need to replace my laptop and am considering changing to a desktop. It's not going to be used for gaming but my current one is so slow and is giving me various problems (5 years old so no shame to it Smile ), I really need to treat myself.

I am totally lost with the jargon re processors (now there's a surprise Surprised ), can I ask some advice as to the minimum spec I should be looking for. As I said I don't need fancy stuff, just a resonable fast one....

Hi Jinty,

Back in the day I used to sell computers wholesale - even I get confused
over the latest offerings Smile

I was looking to replace my daughters laptop (of a similar age to yours) and
replace it with a desktop. I was lucky as Staples had a clearout in a local
store and managed to get a good deal on a Dell branded PC.

When I was looking, she had similar requirements to yours, it was clear
that even the current entry model was far superior to the old laptop
simply because technology had got better and costs reduced.

I just had a look on Tesco Direct for you as sometimes they have specials on
- or at least some of their suppliers do.

They have full systems i.e. base, monitor KB & mouse from 249

or new systems like the

for 349 new with everything
and a good spec i.e. 8GB Ram & 2TB Hard drive includes monitor. The
Lenovo is a better spec than anything I have here - but I do like to run
PC's for years... and years Smile

It all depends really how much you want to spend - you can spend more
and get bigger this or faster that but often I find that you are paying for
things you probably don't need or won't use.

Don't know if that helps at all - it sounded better in my head than it
reads lol Smile

Cheers

Steve

If the only reason you want a desktop is because you want something faster then don't discount a laptop. Do you ever:
Tickle the keys in bed.
On the settee.
Plug it into the TV.
Use it while travelling.
I think you could get the speed you want while still have the benefits of a laptop.
Paul.

If you do go for a laptop, and that would be my choice, when you think you know which one.... Look at the Reviews for it... If you are likely to watch any films / videos / TV on it take particular note of the Sound quality... Many, or most laptops have very poor sound. Not necessarily the quality, but also the volume. I paid over 600 euros for a Lenovo and I cannot hear it properly on full volume.

Just don't rush in.... Review it....

Pro: desktop every time (I have 5). More robust, better keyboard, 21" screen is a pleasure to use, better chance to add bits and pieces, generally easierto use.
