Cyprus: Early start to the 2018 season

The tourist season in Cyprus will start earlier this year due to the timing of
Easter and optimism is high according to a report in local Cypriot newspaper
Phileleftheros.

The western Christian Easter period starts towards the end of March this year
with the Orthodox Easter a short while later starting in the first week of April.
This means that hotels are preparing to welcome the first tourists for the
season in... [

Limassol have shown the way ahead. They turned the town into a giant, free swimming pool last night. Shocked Cool Laughing

Statistical BS, arrivals do not mean an increase in expenditure on the ground.
when will the CTO and Hotelier corporation stop patting themselves on the back for an increase of tourism that does not equate to a increase in tourist expenditure.
we all know that the increase is due to the "terrorist affect" of Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia, but that will be short lived as those countries will portray their destinations as safe, and will offer far cheaper tourism to boost their incomes than Cyprus will offer!
Cyprus has become a AI destination because of the problems caused in otherwise less safe countries, when they are deemed more safe they will be a cheaper destination and Cyprus tourism will drop again.
for Cyprus to be a quality destination, it needs to attract quality customers, get rid of AI, and half board, Cyprus must, again form its own tour operator, ( it does not need travel bucket shops, the internet can do that rent free), the Cypriot tour operator can sell those hotels that have been closed for years and persuade those that have felt the need to go AI to change their minds, for tourism to be again a real boost to the the economy, the money must stay in Cyprus, and not be spent by tourists to a foreign company before they even land on the island, whose only expenditure is for maybe one night out and duty frees!

I don't think we all know that to be fair. Of course some of the increase will
be due to troubles elsewhere but it's too simplistic to say it's all down to that.

There are a few reasons I say this - terrorist attacks could also have a
negative affect dissuading people from booking in Cyprus. Secondly whilst
people couldn't pick Tunisia and Egypt they could have picked any other
country vying for their trade. Thirdly when the Tunisia attack happened in
2016 it was the height of the summer season and the resorts were nearly
at full capacity anyway with an increased number of visitors. When the
Sinai attacked happened that was towards the end of the season and
the numbers then made little impact. Numbers prior to the attacks were
increasing.

In addition to all the above the country in recent years has had to deal
with the loss of its national carrier, fallout from the financial collapse
and the reduced value of the pound in its major market.

The CTO whilst not responsible for all the increase have to get at least
some credit that despite all the above numbers have increased significantly
in recent years.

There is much more to do - for instance winter opening etc - but we do
have a few positives: more airlines bringing more people that ever. More
connections to more destinations. More new hotel bed capacity than ever.
Hotels getting refurbs, extensions etc. The CTO has had a hand in all of
this so it's not like they have done nothing.

BTW From what I can tell the number of tourists coming to Cyprus under
AI hasn't changed really due to the "terrorist effect" as it was roughly
the same in the years before and after at around 40%.

For sure the CTO needs changing and its remit split so that it can
concentrate on one aspect rather than what happens at present. There
are certainly improvements that can and should be made - however
they do deserve some credit for the improved results.

Cheers

Which tour operators are pulling out?

Yes they have plenty still to complete in Pernera & Protaras in the next
month and no doubt it won't all get done in time for the start. The article
is about Cyprus in general though and not all areas are undergoing as much
building works.
