Hi All, I have just installed 17.10 from scratch. At the moment I am thinking of going back to 16.04 (my previous release).
I am finding it very difficult to use, and so far cannot find the terminal. Does anyone know how to access it please?

Regards to all, Jim.

I understand that Ubuntu has got rid of its default Unity desktop manager and is using Gnome 3, which I hate, and I use Mate on every version of Linux I use.

Does CTRL+ALT+T or ALT+F2 open a terminal?

thanks a lot Kwacka. CTRL+ALT+T does the trick. I will look into Mate. This really seems a bag-of-worms to me (it is probably a lot to do with ME!!!). Regards, Jim.

Hi Kwacka, I have put mate up now, from a "stick" as I could not access the floppy. However to get programs I have to use a diskette. I cannot use the stick I booted from, it wants a diskette and I cannot access it. Any suggestions please? Regards, Jim.

Ubuntu Mate is a full version, and you can download and install the full version.

I read that you can install with ubuntu-mate-desktop and select Mate or Gnome when you log in.

Thanks for that Kwacker. I am beginning to wonder if I have a virus. We have two different HP laptops, aand neither will do anything with a blank disk. I have unwrapped a new diskette today (sony DVD +rw) and startup disk creator will not use it. when I eject it. the system writes to it before ejecting. When I look in the side panel.and hover over the eject sign is says

I notice that I get this hovering anywhere over the "blank DVD".
My next step is to put up 12.04 ubuntu from an old system disk, and see what that does.
I will probably run clamav before doing it. Regards, Jim.

When you remove the CD/DVD has it been 'unmounted'. You can check this by using the terminal and typing lsmnt, a mounted disk will be shown as /dev/sr0.

As you probably know, burn:/// is the command to burn an optical disk, is there something in a queue waiting to to burned?

Hi Kwacka, thanks for your reply. On MY laptop,(now ubuntu mate 17.10), when trying the terminal (lsmnt) I get "command not found". I have run clamtk on both systems, and found no virus. BTW, looking back through forum I had an almost identical problem in 2012!
I will look further tomorrow. Many thanks for your help, regards Jim.

Hi Kwacka, Failed miserably and have gone back to ubuntu 16.04!

I screwed my system and was down for a couple of weeks. I think the basic problem was me and "new stuff". I will probably have another go next year when the new LTS releases are out - AND I have done a bit of reading!! I have not ruled out hardware problems, but I think it is mainly ME!

Thanks for your help, regards Jim.

My 17.10 is working fine, terminal still in applications, lock to bar or desktop shortcut

Only problem I had was getting skype working but suspect that was my ageing windows webcam.

While in UK I installed Mate on my daughters laptop she has a lot of trouble with it losing wifi and general sluggish over all uses.
