I have an orange tree in my garden, loaded with fruit. But a lot of them split open and fall off the tree. Can anyone tell me why this is ?
The tree is well watered and sheltered, in the back corner of my garden. I have a little Cypriot Fella, who comes and sprays my fruit trees once a fortnight. He only speaks broken English, and seems to think this is normal. I do not know the correct name of the type of Oranges they are, but we would call them a blood orange. They are beautiful tasting when picked, and my little Cypriot friend reckons they will be great at Christmas, but I wonder if I will have any left by then ?
Anybody have any comments on this ?

If oranges behave like tomatos then sporadic watering is probably the cause. If the plants are too dry then the fruit may set, so when it rains or the plant is watered, the fruit swells the skin does not expand and the splitting occurs.
Paul.

Yep-I agree with post no.2...the really hot long summer we've had has not helped citrus trees -watering has been the problem ,too little early in the year.

It doesn't solve the problem, but you can still use the split, fallen, fruit. Don't waste it!
