Reading the newspapers online on Saturday I found an article in the Guardian which was also on the BBC website stating that some Cypriots were being given a new iPhone X as part of an advertising campaign for only 5 euros. They said it was to boost the low sales figures in Cyprus. I clicked on the link and got the real iPhone X website together with the conventional application form requiring card details exactly as found for real purchases. There was also a digital clock with a countdown. Entering my name, the system itself wrote my details which I only had to click on and then add my Visa card details. Sent it off and sure enough, an SMS from the bank showed my 5.66 euros were deducted.
Last evening I got an SMS saying a further € 99.49 had been deducted from my Visa account. OK, so I'd been scammed. I immediately phoned 1bank and got my card blocked. At the BOC this morning their system shows this payment is "on hold".
We'll see what happens next.
