Hi Nigel, can you advise on the process of applying to become a Cypriot National and applying for a Cypriot Passport. I presume this will have to be done through a solicitor, what documentation/information is required?

Hi SBS

The information you need can be found on the Interior Ministry's website at

(Note that you must have been permanently resident in Cyprus for seven years - assuming that you are not a child of a Cypriot citizen).

No lawyer required.

Regards,

SBS - No need to use a solicitor. If you go to the government office next to the bakery on the road from Paralimni to Sotira (from the traffic light), you can speak to a man about this. I spoke with him and he was very helpful though quite informal. You will have to pay 500 Euros to apply for citizenship, which is non-refundable if your application is denied. The application can take 1-2 years for approval. Once approved you have to pay another 500 Euros.

I am getting ready to start this process.

Is it correct that you now have to be able to speak and understand Greek now as one of the requirements?
This was not the case when I applied , although all forms were in Greek .
My application took 3 months to process but would be interested to know if that too has changed Very Happy

The man I spoke to said that being able to speak Greek is not a requirement, though I have been taking classes.

That's good to know. One hears so many stories it is always good to check. Things change on what seems on a daily basis here. Or we are told something is law only to find out months later it was never " ratified " . Very confusing and also frustrating .
I do wonder at times why I bothered but after BREXIT it could still be useful as far as travel within Europe is concerned
