On BBC 2's Newsnight I learned of the tragic death at the age of 51, following a stroke, of the ex-BBC journalist Liz MacKean.
The reports she was noted for were the exposure of Jimmy Saville and Sir Cyril Smith as sexual abusers, the dumping of toxic waste off the African coast (leading to the deaths of up to 30,000), the persecution of gay men in Russia and the support of American evangelists for anti-gay laws around the world, changes in the NHS, and the experiences of young people leaving the care system.
She took voluntary redundancy when the Newsnight report of Jimmy Saville was cancelled and was later hired by Channel 4 for some of the above reports in their 'Dispatches' series.
Winner of several awards from her peers, she has been described as “remarkably tenacious and resourceful reporter” by the head of BBC News.
We could do with more with her principles and determination in today's news industry.
