More cats than people in Cyprus

The National Committee for the Protection of Animals expects to meet by
next month to decide how a one-off €75,000 state grant can be best used to
help control Cyprus’ out of control cat population.

The Committee was created by the state and is made up of stakeholders
from the public and private sector, including animal welfare activists.

The one-off €75,000 grant announced by the Cabinet last week will likely go
towards reviving a cat sterilising and neutering scheme that had just begun
to show results when its €50,000 per year funding was cut off when the crisis
bit in 2012-2013.... [

Be interesting to know how that 75,000 euro is going to be distributed?
In a central fund? to individual Municipalities? or whatever. And who will be accountable for how it is spent? Presumably vets will be doing the neutering/spaying - will there be a set charge for this that vets must adhere to or will they be free to charge whatever they want?

It's such a small amount for such a huge problem it would be a pity to let it be wasted by not having a definitive plan in position at the outset.

will it be just for the ferals?? or cats/dogs with owners. doesnt seem fair that responsible owners, both cypriot & others pay & others get free. I was surprised how cheap vets fees are compared to UK here. got all 4 cats vaccinated for a lot less than pay for 1 in london.
Yet people refuse to take them to vets. neighbour kindly rescued an orphan kitten but when we suggested taking to vets they looked at us as if we were mad. they didnt want her in house which is fair enough. gave them 1 of our travel crates for it to sleep in and bought it 2 tins of kitten food & cartons of milk. after that they bought it no food as say it will hunt. maybe right but was so young should have still been with its mum. then about 2 weeks later it went missing. 3 kids crying but not really looked for her. gone now for around 6 weeks. hoping has found a new home but more likely killed by the Tom cats is neighbourhood.
