Can anyone tell me if it's possible to buy a second hand car in the UK and have the vehicle owner and vehicle driver as two different names? I'm thinking of buying a car in the UK for my son to use. Would he be able to tax/ insure it in his name but I would be the registered owner? Joyce
As others have already pointed out, in the UK the Owner and Registered Keeper may be the same person or two different people. The only document proving ownership is the bill of sale/document of gifting.
The car's Registration Document is issued to the Registered Keeper at the Registered Keeper's address.
The Registered Keeper is responsible for the Road Tax.
The insurance companies are interested in the details of the Registered Keeper (and so the area in which the vehicle will be kept etc..) They don't care who actually owns it.
If the vehicle is not being kept at/outside/near the address on the Registration Document, the insurers generally say they have to be notified or it will invalidate the insurance.
Same thing applies if those insured have addresses different to those shown on their driving licences (ie they've moved without notifying the DVLA).
