Brussels must involve national and regional parliaments in the ratification of trade. The European Court of Justice said the EUs trade agreement with Singapore could not be ratified merely by EU governments and the European Parliament, but also needed the approval of the 38 national and regional assemblies across the bloc.

Or, to put it another way:

"The much-anticipated decision from the court in Luxembourg surprised experts by ruling that on key areas - including financial services and transport - the European Union does not need to seek ratification of a trade deal by the EUs 38 national and local parliaments....................

.............The Court of justice says all services - even transport - can be ratified by a qualified majority vote, which is potentially quite a big opening for the UK, said Steve Peers, professor of EU law at Essex University. It could certainly make things easier.

"The court ruled that the EU did not have exclusive competence to conclude the Singapore deal, but said that only in two narrow areas - namely non-direct foreign investment and the investor-state dispute resolution mechanisms - did it need to seek ratification by national parliaments."

Please though, my apologies. Do continue your endless "We're all doomed (hopefully) I tell you!" postings.

When banding these trade deals about it's perhaps worth bearing in mind that for the likes of Canada and Singapore it's a case of opening up a market. However, for the UK it's more a question of continuing an already existing trading relationship - in whatever form.
