Vascular dementia

My 84 year old uncle in the UK was diagnosed with vascular dementia a couple of months ago. It's a condition that I know virtually nothing about so wonder if any members have any experience of or know anything about the disease?

Also what would be the options for social care for this condition in the UK as and when he needs it. He lives alone in a large house in SE England. He has a partner but she is 80 years old, not in good health, and it is unlikely that she would be able to cope.

His wife suffered with alzheimers and was nursed at home by my uncle and round-the-clock nurses - not sure if they were private nurses but I imagine that 24 hour nursing was and is not an NHS option.

Any info would be appreciated. Also any insight into financial side of things for care, would the house be sold to pay etc.?

I do home care work in the UK and many of my ladies and gents have Alzheimers/dementia of varying degrees.

If, as you say your uncle has only recently been diagnosed, he could stay in his house with help.

There are a lot of home care companies around that could assist with personal care, shopping and companionship. Do plenty of research into the companies before deciding which one suits.

Round the clock nursing would more than likely be a private agency.

I suggest you contact social services regarding costs of care as it is means tested to a certain degree. Different for England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Vascular dementia sufferers tend to stay the same for a while and then the dementia will suddenly drop (get worse). Unlike Alzheimer's where it is more gradual.

I hope I have been of some help to you. All I can advise is be patient, don't keep correcting him if he gets mixed up. Take a walk down memory lane as it is more the present that is confusing. If he likes music or singing put a cd or dvd on for him.

There could be a day centre in your area that he could go to, that offer therapy and eveyone there are in the same boat. Also they are picked up and dropped off. Social services could advise if one in your area.

I've put a link which maybe of help to you.

Many thanks Jacs, that's really helpful and I'll certainly follow your suggestions and have a look also at the suggested website. I've lived away from the UK for 14 years so am completely out of touch with what happens in cases like my uncle's. He does have a partner who tries to help and also his 54 year old daughter lives only 10 minutes away but sadly she is one of those people who can't seem to cope and treats his dementia as if he had a dose of flu! Hence my wanting to know as much as I can.
