I am interested in buying an old house built of the traditional mud/straw brick
Does anyone have experience of this?
What do I need to know?
Could anyone recommend a structural surveyor to have a look at a property - I presume I can have this done before making an offer to an estate agent?
Does anyone have experience of maintaining this material?
It looks like the walls are cracked everywhere but this might be on the surface, also the roof under the tiles looks like it's made of old wood.
Am I looking at any old crock or are the old houses good value?
Sorry, it was meant to be one question - basically I don't know what to judge by looking at this house
I would be very weary something like this. These properties are being pulled down in many villages as they are now deemed to be unsafe. I doubt you would be able to repair and walls that are cracked after all it is just mud and straw.
The old style roofing made of wooden poles would cost a few bob to repair if you can get the materials today and even the skilled builders to put them up.
IMHO, unless you are willing to put up with a lot of aggro and expense I would stay away. Sorry to be so negative, but those are days gone by.
Good luck all the same
