Spurs, absolutely correct.
Most modern politicians principles are sold very cheaply.
Not his, he knew where he stood and didn't compromise his beliefs for ambition.

One of the best public speakers I have ever heard. Also a gentleman. I wrote to him on occasion in relation to me work and he always replied personally, in longhand.

A truly lovely, loyal man. I had the pleasure of working for him when he was in Technology. He heard that I had lost my 9 year old Son and took the trouble to send a wreath.

As said a wonderful speaker and a man of principles. He was also a strict teetotaler but would always pay a round. RIP

Liked him all my adult life. We don't seem to have any real characters left in politics and public life now. All churned out the same and told what to say etc.

His farewell speech in the House of Commons he stated his "5 little rules"

Quote:
“In the course of my life I have developed five little democratic questions. If one meets a powerful person — Adolf Hitler, Joe Stalin or Bill Gates — ask them five questions: ‘What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?’ If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system.”

Or at an earlier setting:

Quote:
He had just delivered a fierce speech in front of an admiring crowd. At the end he sat down on the stage, his legs dangling over the side, lit up his pipe and poured out a cup of tea from his thermos. A man approached him and explained that he was a Tory. He wanted to say something else, but Benn interrupted. ‘Oh, I do hope I haven’t said anything which upset you.’
