Considering his lifestyle for much of it - he didn't have a bad innings did he?
I didn't appreciate until the obituary that, unlike his contemporaries, O'Toole gave up alcohol - as long ago as 1975.
That is right, it was the booze and fags that caused his health scare in the mid-1970s.
I gather from various press reports and TV reviews of him that it was the legacy of that poor lifestyle that eventually killed him off.
He never gave up smoking.
A fab actor, and will be very much missed.
