I know this will be - rightly - transferred to the "in our thoughts" section; however, I've been entertained and thrilled by Tom Clancy's books for a very long time.

As an ex Forces member I've been amazed and intrigued by where he gets such a clear and factual insight into military matters and how he has translated that so successfully into the "what if" domain.

RIP Tom

I flew in Anti Submarine Warfare Nimrods for years and was absolutely gobsmacked by how much the guy knew about the nuts-n-bolts of that sphere. Shocked Some of it was Official Secrets stuff in my world.

I enjoyed many of his earlier books but thought that later ones became more and more fantastic.

Then the news came out that he'd been using other writers to produce books under his name, and about 10 years ago was his publishers were forced to acknowledge this by adding the real writer's name to the cover. E.g. the book bearing the title 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell' was written by David Michaels, which is a pseudonym of Raymond Benson.

The US armed forces have always been more open than the British, e.g. inviting TV cameras aboard for a look around nuclear submarines in the 70s.

I was thinking in particular about his description of the SOSUS system which, certainly well into the 80's, was pretty much a TS subject.

Nevertheless, I doubt he gave anything away to the USSR, which at the time, as I recall, were getting all of our encrypted transmissions courtesy of the Walkers. Sad

Would anybody else like to raise a thread on Tom Clancy? Rolling Eyes

I should clarify that - since the move to the Coffee Shop (Skettos please! Very Happy ) - by saying that in General, for some strange reason, there were 3 follow-on posts of "Tom Clancy".

Shoulda gone to specsavers?

Very Happy
