There is no such thing as a conveyancing solicitor in Cyprus.

It might be a pedantic point, but its an important one to understand before appointing a 'lawyer' to act on your behalf.

Conveyancing, like many areas of law in Cyprus, is unregulated and therefore those that practice it do not come with the same assurances as a solicitor or other regulated conveyancer in the UK.

Please be aware that the British High Commission do NOT recommend nor approve lawyers regardless of how others interpret their website.

What the British High Commission does is give a list of English speaking lawyers nothing more nothing less. This does not mean they recommend any of them.

Word of mouth with those you trust is the best way forward.

Hi,

When purchasing my "original property" in Cyprus I was recommended not to use a local "solicitor" as many were in "cahoots" with "local developers" etc - I am in no way saying that this is always the case, but I took heed and went with a recommendation and used a solicitor in Limassol - "Areti Charidemou" - I know a bit out of the way, but I only had to make the trip once and everything else I have been able to deal with via e-mail etc. I also know tht the BBC use her in connection with legal issues re buying & selling in conjunction with any of their "Travel series". I have also used "Areti" in obtaining "Probate" re my late husbands death and although quite expensive, these fees are not regulated by the "Solicitors" themselves, but by the "Cyprus Bar Assoc" - Anyway my point being is that she has been excellent and I can't recommend her enough. Her details are "Areti Charidemou Law Firm - Tel No: 00357 25 508000.

Also I have a friend who also recently lost her husband and obviously had so much stress going on in her life and decided to sell her apartment here in Cyprus and she thoroughly recommends Marion Carter in Larnaca 00357 24636115 - who also sorted out her probate and dealt with a very obnoxious man on our complex who was acting as an agent for selling apartments and was hassling her and giving her grief that she could well do without at this stressful time.

Anyway - hope this helps.

Cheers,
Lyndi.

In response to two of the posts....

I agree with the recommendation of Marion Carter whom I have used personally and also Areti Charidamou used by a friend of mine.

Also, to the post re: 'unregulated' - not wanting to be pedantic but......
Whilst it is all too true in the case of most Cypriot Lawyers, Marion Carter being a British Solicitor is "Regulated by the Solcitors Regulatory Authority of England and Wales" . I know this because it was quoted on every single written communication be it letter or email.[/b]
