our son is thinking of his daughter finishing her g.c.s.e.'s on the Oxford Open Learning's correspondence course
She is 15, so it will be her final exam year.
He wants to know if there is any reason why she can't take this course instead of enrolling in a school over here ?
They will be coming over in June and her education is very important to them.
He has looked into the private schools and they just seem to be quite a way over their budget. quoted from 5.5 - 7.5 K p.a. !!!
The O.O.L. costs 845 GBP for 3 G.C.S.E's, with the only extra costs being the flights back to UK for the exams and the exams themselves.(Probably 4-500 pounds).
We have heard so many reasons not to enrol her in a local state school and the private schools are very expensive, so they feel this will be a good inexpensive alternative, that will enable her to finish her education.
The info from the Cy gov web-site states education is compulory for children from age 6 until the child's 15th birthday.
Regarding your grand-daughter and exams. It is entirely possible to sit GCSE's here in Cyprus as an external candidate. If you contact the British Council in Nicosia they shoud be able to give you a list of schools and institutions around Cyprus where students can sit GCSE and iGCSE as private candidatres. (your grand-daughter may not need to go back to the UK to sit the exams after all!)
I know of a number of schools who have accepted home-educated students as private candidates including The King Richard School on the army base (they have the AQA exam board)
Also the Med High has accepted Home-educated students for exams. It might be worth contacting the various schools and asking to speak to the examinations officer for info on exams, exam boards and fees etc.
