Sheriff Joe is at it again!!
Maybe Gordon Brown could pick up a few pointers here......
You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb. Well........

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and Behaviour. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.
I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.
He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Chris tmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Chris tmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.
Yup, he was re-elected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.
To those of you not familiar with Joe Arpaio
He is the Maricopa Arizona county Sherrif
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the ' Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For Discrimination.
He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.
When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working
ON My Chain Gangs.
He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton......If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees Inside The Week Before.
Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.
'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear,
But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Mouths!'
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.
Way To Go, Sheriff!

How does it compare to other jails re repeat offenders? Here's another side to the story. http://www.arpaio.com/

I think gormless Gordon should start closer to home looking for inspiration.
Doncaster's Mayor, Peter Davies, for instance:
Priorities:
The Mayor is committed to improving the borough and ensuring residents are offered the best possible services.
Progress / Key decisions since taking office :
Appointed a mixed Cabinet of committed Councillors
Cut Mayor's salary from around £73,000 to £30,000 per year
Axed Mayor's chauffeur driven car (approximately £6,000)
Stopped future funding for gay pride event (£3,000)
Stopped council newspaper Doncaster News
Directed that two children's social worker posts be reinstated at Doncaster Royal Infirmary to specifically assist children in hospital and to help detect abuse
Axed membership of Local Government Association and Local Government Information Unit (approximately £80,000)
Where possible, stopped funding for translation services and instead encourage people to learn English
Cut twinning ties with five towns saving approximately £4,000+
Written to the Electoral Commission to cut the number of Councillors from 63 to 21 which could save upwards of £1,000,000
Future priorities:
Lower Council Tax by cutting extortionate levels of bureaucracy and other waste
End malpractice and mismanagement in the council
Hold a referendum on the Mayoral governance of Doncaster
Reduce the number of councillors from 63 to 21
Conduct a review of the A638 Quality Bus Corridor and the traffic mayhem around the Dome
Scrap politically correct non-jobs and encourage the former employees to seek meaningful employment
Encourage every school to opt out of local authority control – money should go directly to schools to raise deteriorating educational standards
Ensure police concentrate resources on catching criminals
Introduce zero tolerance of anti-social behaviour and impose penalties for such everyday practices as using foul language in public and spitting in the street
Halt the architectural vandalism of Doncaster and protect the town’s heritage

Sadly this mis-informed post has been doing the rounds for several years.
That nice sheriff has also, in an attempt to keep crime figures down, apparently failed to investigate many crimes (including several rapes), FBI figures for 2006 and 2007 indicate an overall drop in crime rates in Arizona of around 2%, while in Maricopa County crime rates increased by 20% over the same period.
He has failed to make any inroads into the number of repeat offenders (almost exactly the same figures as his predecessor) and cost the county he works in 43 million dollars in restitution to families of those who died in prison (usually because they weren't allowed to see a doctor) and a current class action suit on behalf of those remanded for trial (i.e. innocent until proven guilty) such as Charles Agster, a 33 year old mentally handicapped man who's parents had taken him to a psychitric hospital. Police were called when he refused to leave a shop. He was placed in a restraint chair, placed a hood over his head, he had a seizure and was declared brain-dead 3 days later. (That cost the county 9 million dollars).
or Brian Crenshaw was a legally blind and mentally disabled inmate who suffered fatal injuries while being held in Maricopa County Jail for shoplifting. The injuries that led to his death were initially blamed on a fall from his bunk but were later discovered to have been the result of a brutal beating by jail guards.
or
Richard Post was a paraplegic inmate arrested in 1996 for possession of marijuana and trespass. He was placed in a restraint chair by guards and his neck was broken in the process. Post settled his claims against the Sheriff's office for $800,000
or
Jose Rodriquez, 39, died in a pool of his own vomit on a jail floor. His cries for help went ignored by Arpaio's jail employees. Rodriquez's dehydration, fever and twitching ultimately led to his death, even while inmates shouted for help.
or
Deborah Braillard, 46, was documented as a diabetic in the jail's health records. Her cellmates say a nurse did not give Braillard insulin, and then detention officers ignored her when she went into diabetic shock. Braillard died on January 23, 2005, ultimately from lack of insulin
or
Clint Yarbrough suffocated in a jail restraint chair. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved an undisclosed settlement payout to the family in excess of $1 million
or
A Federal Inspector warned that the gaol's psychitric unit was a 'suicide waiting to happen". A Department of Justice report specifically cautioned that inmates could use "overhanging structures" to hang themselves. This was ignored and at least 4 suspects Kevin Holschlag, Michael Sanderson, Thomas Cooley and Juan Vasquez subsequently died.
or
On June 11, 2008, Ray Stern, a reporter for the Phoenix New Times, was surrounded by several deputies while trying to examine public records at the City of Phoenix public records counter. Stern called City Attorney Gary Verburg, who came down and instructed the deputies that Stern had the right to view the records. The deputies then threatened to simply arrest Stern on the spot. Later, a city "conflict resolution manager" walked up and laid down an Arizona law book. She pointed to the section of public records law that essentially says anyone can look at any public record during business hours. City Attorney Verburg told the deputies again that Stern had the right to look at any public record. Upon hearing that, the deputies warned Stern again that if he tried to look at the documents he would be arrested.
Or
At a December 17, 2008 meeting, four audience members at a County Board of Supervisors meeting were arrested for suspicion of disorderly conduct and trespassing, after they applauded an anti-Arpaio speaker

Is that the same Peter Davies who has publicly stated his admiration of the Taleban for their 'strong family values'?

Thank you Kwacka. I posted this article hoping someone would come along and highlight the "darker side" of Sheriff Arpaio. Reason being that I was sent this article by someone to whom, in conversation later, I referred to Arpaio as a wolf in sheep's clothing and got really slated for losing sight of his acclaimed reforms and plus the fact that he must have been doing something good to get re-elected. I could not remember where I had read it, but I said that I recall a few years back reading an article about some of the atrocities that were instigated by this supposedly law enforcer. However, this person with whom I was having this conversation indicated that that my little grey cells were getting Arpaio confused with someone else...... I knew I could count on someone on the forum coming along and opening up the topic - whether for or against - but you can be sure I am definitely not an Arpaio fan! Regards, Mils
