Hi When we over last october we took a rental car over to famagusta and beyond (bogaz) i think - we did'nt get right to the end of the peninsula but next tiem we are over would like to maybe spend 2/3 days up on turtle beach (i think that's what it's called) in one of the beach shacks - does anyone know whether you can go over for more than a day by car and if so does that mean 3x the hassle and form filling at the border checkpoint also any pointers to where to go would be good (we did stop at salamis last time) - thanks rob

Hi Rob. You can go across and stay for as long as you want in the north, you are an EU citizen and as such can travel wherever you like on the island. There will be no extra hassle at the crossing/border, the same process is carried out for a days stay or longer and you can exit from a crossing different to your entry. Just remember to take out enough car insurance to cover your stay.
Like you I havent been right to the end of the pan handle as the friends I have living over there, live in the opposite direction, but it is something that I must do.
I have to say that Guzelyert/Morphou, on the west coast, is a very beautiful and wild part of the island. It is always very green, heavily forested and the coast is stunning. Guzelyert in Turkish means beautiful land and although it is not a very pleasing sound to us, the meaning is spot on.
I hope you enjoy your stay on whatever side of the island......Maggie Larnaca

thanks maggie - will check out your recomendations and see whether we can fit it all in we do enjoy the southern side of things (buying apt there so we must do) but we also like the idea of seeing the less developed north side - we go to goa in india aswell for holidays and when we were there (north cyprus that is) for the day last year it sort of had that undisturbed quality that we get in some of the more remote beaches in goa - so really fancy seeing more of it before it gets spoilt rob

Good day Rob, A just in case comment, but you are probably aware that some vehicle rental companies 'do not allow' their cars to be taken to the north. Insurance problems for them. Have a nice trip. Gilda (and Geoff)

Hi Rob, We went to Nangomi Bay last June. It's on the way to Apostolos Andreas. Stayed in one of the beach shacks, similar setup to Goa, but not as cheap! The turtles come ashore to nest in June, although unfortunately we didn't see one, but saw the tracks on the beach the next morning. Take a torch as there's no electricity beyond Dipkarpaz. The beaches are fantastic up there, miles of sand almost totally deserted. The beach t the Seabird Hotel is also fantastic. I would recommend you get the Lonely Planet guide for Cyprus, gives lots of info about turtle beaches. Regards Rudi

I personally don't think the drive to Aps. Andreas is worth it, the turtle beaches are nice but it's a more enjoyable drive across to the West, around Morphou and beyond.
