If you store a car here in Cyprus you can also get the local equivalent of a SORN off road circulation licence credit for when you are back in the cold places.

Not guaranteed by any means but when I asked the same of a dealership where we were looking at buying a car they told me that they were quite happy to act as your address i.e. in case you are having a new house built so have no address of your own. Find your car and then just ask the seller. Good luck. Christine

Just a word of warning, make sure you pay your import tax's asap, and don't allow anyone else to drive your car until you have. We have just returned from Cyprus after renting a villa as we have sold our property in Cyprus and with a profit I would like to say. We also hired a car off the owner of the villa, he had it fully insured for any driver to use. We were told we could take the car over the boarder which we did. We paid the insurance they wanted at the boarder for a month and off we went with no problem. Until we returned and they would allow us back over as the import taxes on the car hadn't been paid. The car had only been in Cyprus for a couple of week, but because we were not the owner of the car we were not entitled to use it. The car was taken off us there and then and we were left with a piece of paper to give the owner. They told us this was the third car they had taken that week. I hope me saying this will save the same thing happening to someone else. Ang

Ang, what an awful experience for you. Hopefully, as you say, your posting will be helpful for others. Not wishing to be 'nosey' but.... was the car confiscated by the Turks or the Greeks? Am assuming the latter. Either way, sounds like the authorities are tightening up on their import taxes but sounds strange if the car has only been on the island for a 'few weeks'. Presumably, there is a 'tax-free' period/allowance i.e. otherwise tourists would be precluded from travelling with their own cars? What is the time limit allowed before import duties are due - anyone know? :?: Christine

Hi Christine, It was taken from us my the Cypriots as we came back over. The reason they gave is the only people who are entitled to drive the car are the owners. As far as the owner was concerned we were able to drive it as we were insured on the car, but this is not the case. They did give us a lift home in the police car so at least we weren't stranded.
