It is 70 years today since Manchester Airport was opened as Ringway Airport. It now carries over 20 million passengers each year. Just shows how air travel has grown in one lifetime really. Jan

Jan, the original name was Ringway Aerodrome and it played a very important part of the training of Airborne Forces during WW2. Needless to say it has expanded enormously since. I've never quite understood why it has the name of Manchester Airport as it's out on the Cheshire Plain, miles outside Manchester.

It has a Manchester post code M90...
and a 0161 std code
I think that qualifies to be classified as being in Manchester. stick to windups Brian, geography is obviously a weak point.

ABR, Geography doesn't appear to be one of your strongpoints either. When the airport was originally completed in 1938, it was entirely within the Cheshire boundaries and within the Cheshire parish of Ringway, hence it's original name. In 1974 there was a shake-up of counties and parts of Lancashire and Cheshire were swallowed up under Greater Manchester including part of the airport because even now it's situated in such a way that some of it falls within GM and some within Cheshire. It's situated 14km outside Manchester city centre near to Wilmslow so perhaps it should be called Wilmslow International Airport. Stick around and be educated!

Can't wait to tell the lads from Benchill that their from Cheshire, I take you must have flown from here 'once' to be such an expert. 8)

Have had many a discussion about Salford being bigger than Manchester..........it was, until they started moving boundaries and it became Gtr Manchester. Gtr Manchester then took in Cheshire also. Stockport was always Cheshire now its Gtr Manchester. Many a heated discussion too about Old trafford (Salford) it might have a Manc postcode now, but it was always in Salford before. Same with Manc Airport, that was always in Cheshire, but not anymore apparantly!!! Brian, is Wilmslow still Cheshire or have they nicked that aswell?

opened in 1938, heres plan

Posted By: Kathyoke

Says on the plan 'located xx miles south of the centre of Manchester'

Well us locals have always known the airport as Manchester Airport. So even if it borders Cheshire or anywhere else we just like it to be dear old Manchester Airport so no more arguments please. Of course there is also Barton Airport but that is where most of the light aircraft fly from and flying lessons and so on are from that one. No commercial flying from there as far as I know.

Kathy, yes, Wilmslow is still Cheshire. I doubt the residents would have it any other way. Jan, what used to be Barton Aerodrome or Airport is now called the City Airport, Manchester.

Which also has a M30 post code and a 0161 std code,
wow, that must be in Cheshire as well then.

ABR I'm assuming you refer to Wilmslow as having a postcode of M30 and an 0161 code. That doesn't mean it's part of Manchester, I think you're under a false impression. Postcodes and dialling codes are for convenience only, they don't indicate that the areas in question are part of the city. Wilmslow is in the Borough of Macclesfield which is, and always has been, Cheshire. The Beckhams used to have a house in Alderley Edge which perhaps also has a M postcode and an 0161 prefix, but you could hardly call that Manchester could you? see the difference?

better not mention Robin Hood.

Posted By: Anything but red

Is that Mr Hood from Liverpool 8)

Posted By: brian16

Well that's another story, Robin Hood Airport is in Doncaster whereas it should be in Nottingham

I know this has been said before, but Robin Hood was a Yorkshireman. :) :) :)

Posted By: brian16

Ah! maybe and maybe not! Question is............did he exist?

Posted By: mortzicia

Personally, I think he's still out there in Sherwood Forest just biding his time.......

Just booked my taxi to Wilmslow airport to take me to Cyprus in the Atlantic, can't wait 3 weeks in the sun 8)
