View The Full Original Topic: Laiki Bank Sold

Hottest gossip in the Nicosian financial circle is that the Laiki has been sold to the Russians. Knowing where it came from I think it's probably true, the other one is that the Russians will get a naval base here....interesting times ahead if that's true.

:? If Laiki Bank has indeed been sold to Russians, is this good or bad??

Good the bank will be recapitalized, just leaves the Bank of Cyprus now....

The government deny this. http://www.sigmalive.com/news/politics/36093

Not if it is being split into good and bad parts prior to sale (as per the Government bill that was due to be voted on later today).
The vote has been cancelled, supposedly as they don't have time to prepare the bill but it could be that the bank HAS been sold and therefore part of the bill is now irrelevant.
If the bank is split prior to sale, which most investors would insist on, then large depositor holders would be expected to lose some of their money.

If the bank is split prior to sale, which most investors would insist on, then large depositor holders would be expected to lose some of their money.

The vote on the split would of gone ahead if the government was keeping the two banks, it would of merged the two good parts and then the two "bad" the bad would of then been spun off into a bad asset bank and most likely sold i.e. for every euro owed then an investor would pay 40-60 cents for the debt.
Now if Gazprom or a consortium of Russians came together they would fund the bank as a whole that is what the bailout is all about. The government will offer asset incentives in the preference of gas or ports or electricity companies or water companies to take this on.
This is a bailout still but just in a nicer way.

Yes you can trawl the web - but with varying accuracy from good to downright rubbish.

Well if you take into account the 2011 Lidl Survey which revealed that 108%
of those responding believe that statistics are made up then I am not sure.

You read the word gossip in the OP and then quoted it yourself....Would it be fair to assume you know what gossip means?
The gossip itself was a fact, the denial that was linked to by Spanner proves it to be so.
Anyway, don't worry, if the Russians do take over I'm sure you're guaranteed a top job...As the local Politburo Censor. =;

What about Laiki bank gents? Russian lessons should be somewhere else.

Надеюсь, что спасение будет решен сегодня перед любым более причинен ущерб. Лично я по-прежнему думаю, что все должны быть включены в решение, то есть первоначальное предложение. Постскриптум не участие России, если они покупают бесполезные банков.

I'll do this in English, it is too much to b*gger about with Google translate! Fact: Just seen a large pile of empty flattened boxes being delivered to a large branch of Laiki in Limassol. Rumour(ish): A good source tells me they are packing up all the documents relating to NPLs (Non-Performing Loans). Makes some sense if they are setting up 'good' and 'bad' banks.

if bank goes bust the appointed administrator wil initially continue to take mortgage payments. Eventually the mortgages will be sold off to other banks. It is unlikely that they could not sell them on as they sell them off at a loss.
The only good news is that whoever buys them cannot change the original conditions of an agreement with payee.

the original conditions of an agreement? what about amended agreements?
iv amended mine twice and i dont like it now, would be great if it went back to the original agreement with no more costs imposed..

I thought along the same lines that someone would come along and buy the mortgage book, only worry is if the debts are so high that even a existing mortgage book is not enough?

The receiver would sell any bits they could, they don't have to sell all the mortgages in one lump.

I guess its best to wait and see what happens in regards to bailout and who it comes from before any more panic ensues, thanks for responses
