Hi, we are hoping to move over to Cyprus hopefully next year. Just want to know if jobs are easy to come by. My husband is a painter and decorator and my sister and I will do anything from cleaning to gardening etc. Are jobs easy to come by? Can't wait to come over.......for good!!

Our friend is a painter and decorator. He is finding work very hard and been back to the UK a few times to boost his income. Many painting firms use cheaper labour (Eastern European for example) as it is not so specialised here. As there is a worldwide recession jobs are not so easy to come by - in the tourist industry got example some hotels haven't opened this year. Also if they can employ an Eastern European for cheaper wages they will. Good luck with whatever you do, but please be sure of your decision do you homework as many Brits have left the Island this year due to the economic turndown.

Yes, unfortunately jobs are hard to find in normal times let alone in the recession. If you're young, blond and slim you may stand a chance of getting a bar/waitressing job in the tourist areas during the summer but you have to be prepared to work long hours. Over here it is who you know, not what you know. Don't expect to find anything for a few months after your arrival, and that's if you're lucky. There are loads of people willing to do cleaning, ironing etc but unfortunately normal households can't afford to employ cleaners at the moment. I don't want to put you off but just being realistic.

Thanks for your reply. We aim to retire over here although only in our fifties! And we aim to bring enough funds to last us 12 months. So not a major rush to find work. Still can't wait to come over though. Cheers Julie

Julieh, the best way to answer your question is to come over for a spell and test the water. Thats how you will know if it is for you or not. Jobs, well this has been cvered before, you may just hit on it on day one you may not, but unless you are here and doing the asking, no one can tell you if you can get a job or not.
Rent a property, have an initial holiday and ask loads of questions.
Good luck and I hope it works out for you. Oh, you do need time to adapt to the way of life here, if you come over comparing everything with how its done in the UK, it will drive you nuts, relax, after all, thats why you are coming right??? Just go with the flow.
Enjoy
