Hi all, I know that this subject has been killed many times, but has anyone imported a 4x4 recentley? My sister is selling her 17 year old Pajero LWB and as the market is flooded with such cars at the minute she is finding it pretty hard. As a result I have pondered over buying it myself and send it out to Cyprus. Please can anyone who has done such a thing recentley with such a car please post any useful prices, shipping companies and locations and procedures for customs? Regards, DAC

Hello.
Its not worth bringing it over mate, the Pajero in the UK would only be worth £500/800 if its a diesel and in good nick and the log book would have to be in your name for at least 6 months before you could ship the jeep to avoid custom charges. Your shipping fees would be approx £800 if its a LWB version, takes between 11 days and 3 weeks to ship, on arrival, you will need to pay unloading and clearing fees, they will vary as well, but take £500 just in case. Dont forget that if you sell the vehicle in Cyprus within a 10 year period you will have to pay a duty, based on the cc of your jeep, a ball park figure for all your costs involved getting the jeep to Cyprus could be as much as £5400 ( crazy but true ), I saw an 1991 Pajero the other day for sale at £1200, so its not worth the hassle bringing such an old vehicle over.
ADVICE ON BUYING A PAJERO.
All pajero's fitted with the 2.5 turbo diesel engine have a cam belt fitted, all 2.8 diesels have the cam chain, its will be expensive having a belt fitted, so get the 2.8 version. The 2.8 has the hump on the bonnet, also pajero's can have trouble with the turbo's getting hot in the cyprus climate and can cause problems.
Best all round big, strong and reliable jeep.
Isuzu trooper. 3.0/3.1 Turbo diesel, chain driven cam, the Cyprus police use them, so what does that tell you!.
Good luck.

Hi Stevie, Thanks for all that information, fortunatley some mug from London bought it off autotrader for £1600, saves me the heart ache! Will keep an eye out for a Isuzo next time we are over. DAC

The 2.8 pajero can have head problems, the 3.0 isuzu trooper can also give lots of problems with the turbo and electronic fuel pump, the older 3.1 is by far the better vehicle. The 2.5 pajero is far less problematic, and a cam belt change is about 110cy including tensioners and gaskets .

Hi Dac My advice would be "DO NOT BOTHER". We brought our 9 year old Pajero from the UK in 2005, we followed all the regulations as laid down by Cyprus. We went to Customs and Excise every month for nearly 2 years until our permanent residents papers came through. After supplying every piece of documentation (including school reports) they requested we were finally granted the Duty Free status and were told to go to the Dept. of Road Transport to register the car onto Cyprus plates. When we got there they did not know what the CO ommission should be and we waited for 3 weeks before this came through. Then we had to have Cypriot driving licences which we duly did. When all of this was completed we were told that because the car was first registered in Japan we should have registered the car with the Dept of Road Transport within the 1st year of the car arriving in Cyprus!!! :?: As it took the immigration and customs and excise departments nearly 2 years to sort out their paperwork how in Gods name could we register the car in the 1st year?  We have now been told that we have to send the car back to the UK at a cost of 500.00cyp. There is no-one in the UK to receive or sell the car for us, not that we can sell it now with the new tax over there. At the moment we are still using the car and have complained to several government officials but have not received a reply. If anyone can advise us of where to go to lodge a complaint we would be most grateful. Lynn

Hi Lynn, Hope you are all well!! Not sure if you have seen this but you can make a complaint about a govt. department here:
  • How do I complain to a Govt. Department? Sorry to hear of the problems and hope that you get them resolved. HTH Cheers Steve

Hi Steve Many thanks for the link, much appreciated and I will submit a complaint straight away and hopefully some one will be able to sort this mess out for us. Haven't seen you and your family for ages, hope you are all well and look forward to seeing you when you are next over.

Hi DAC, if you are still looking for a 3.1 TD Trooper, I have a Long wheelbase 7 seater sitting on my drive waiting for a new home. Will come with a new MOT and service. Paintwork has been redone where it was getting tired. Bought originally from Deafmillipede, now replaced by a Range Rover which I imported.
