My much-loved son in law, currently in intensive care, in James Cook hospital, Middlesbrough, fighting and fighting and fighting an, as yet, undiagnosed illness. We are all devastated. Please God, he'll get through the next couple of days, and be back with us. L

I hadn't realised how comforting it is, to know that others, albeit total strangers, can comfort you, in difficult times. Thank you, all. Returned home from hospital late tonight. He's still anaesthatised/sedated, and looks so peaceful. We sat by his side, amidst all the machinery, tubes, catheters, etc, and just willed him to get better. The next few days will be crucial, as the Consultant gradually reduces the sedation. Thank you, once again. L

Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support, and texted me. You can't imagine how much of a comfort it is. Gary is very poorly. He had developed a chest infection. He is still on life support, dialysis, and other treatment/medication. They bring him out of the anaesthetic each day, to see how he copes, then 'put him under' again. He can respond to their commands eg 'to move his toes' etc, which is good. Completely devastated, and just hoping that each day, brings better news. Linda

8 years ago my I came home from work to find hubby 'falling all over the place', I suspected that he had a ear infection, took him down to the doc surgery who said 'take him straight to the hospital'. Withing 2 days he was in intensive care and not expected to last the night, he has a virus called GUILLIAN BARRE which causes the bodies imune system to close down. 6 months after he was released from the hospital, he was wheelchair bound and had to learn to talk, smile and eat. After about 18 months he made a full recovery, so please have heart and don't give up hope. Our thoughts are with you all. Get well soon Gary Prawn & Hubby

Words cannot express the elation I feel. On Friday morning, the Consultant asked to speak to my daughter and me, and gave us awful news. The prognosis for Gary, was extremely poor. However, over the next 48 hours, the improvement in his condition was miraculous! Last night, when I visited him, he was sitting up, had eaten a small amount of food, and was able to speak coherently. He has a long recovery ahead of him, but time doesn't matter, as long as we still have him. Grateful thanks, to all who have sent good wishes and prayers, via the Forum, and especially text. So comforting. Prawn - I hope your husband continues to enjoy good health. Linda x

What amazing news. We are so pleased for you and your family. Humans are just incredible sometimes, our will is very strong and Gary must be like this too. We wish him a good recovery and as you said it doesn't matter how long it takes. You must all look after yourselves as well. Take care Sue

Linda, so happy to hear the good news. take heart it may be a slow recovery but my hubby is testimony that the body is more resiliant than we sometimes think!! Hubby is now fully recovered, thank goodness, living here helps of course. When we arrived here 4 years ago he had high blood pressure, a thowback to the illness, now normal!!! Of course we are fully aware that should he contact a virus he COULD get the infection again, but why worry about things that MAY happen!! Our thoughs are with you all and we wish Gary the very best. Now is the time to look after yourselves. Prawn

Great news Linda and I do hope that now Gary gets stronger each day and by Christmas you will be celebrating as normal as a family all together. A young relative of ours was in a coma and they did not think that he would make it but he did and now he is just about to become a Dad for the first time. Just over a year and a half to us thinking that he was not going to make it home. Just take each day as it comes now and let him recover in his own good time.

I wanted to share my news, with members of the EC Forum. Gary recently saw the Neurologist and Renal Consultant, and they were SO delighted, and amazed at his recovery, with the result, that he now only has to have 6 monthly check ups. He will get his driving licence back too, very soon. Amazingly, he has also returned to work. I'm so proud to be his Mum in law, and also very proud of my daughter, and grandaughter, who got through the very worst time of their lives. We had our very own miracle. Finally, I'd like to, one last time, thank each and every one of you, for your kind thoughts and prayers. (At one time, there were people praying in Roman Catholic, C of E, Methodist, Mormon, Orthodox, and Muslim places of worship - very comforting, even to a non-churchgoer) Linda
