OK all you fishermen I could do with some advice. My son is coming over for a short visit and wants to do some beach fishing~ there's a ideal location around 5 mins walk from my home . now I haven't a clue about any fishing so could anybody tell me what bait to use . I've thought about bread and sardine mix or small bits of squid but I'm just thinking logicly I really have no idea if it would work . What kind of fish could he expect to catch ~ what size hook and line ? Bill

A few years back I watched two people fishing from the rocks at the beach at Pernera. It appeared to be old bread they were just squeezing up around the hook and casting.... One of the was virtually casting and pulling back in with a fish for about an hour.. ... The other was casting in a similar area (both moving about in a general area).. and caught nothing ... They were catching little tiddlers about 3-5 inch long "white bait"... the sort you fry a whole batch and serve whole....

The beach fishing in Cyprus is more like canal fishing in the uk with regard to the methods to use. A 6 to 9 metre whip with a pole float and a small paste bait. Some folk use a small single hook but I've seen a lot of the locals, and Ive also started, using a small #18 treble hook with a shop bought paste bait molded over the hook. You should catch some boops sapla and possibly some spinefoot. They are both good to eat but you must scale them. There will also be some bream about, and they like a bit of squid. Watch out if you see a fugu, or rabbit fish as the locals call them - a large puffer fish with a beak type mouth, they are very poisonous.

Thin slivers of bacon rind or fat also stay on the hook and work well. If pole or whip fishing don't be scared of loose feeding some sweetcorn as you might on a still water in UK.

Bill, I suppose it depends on what kind of beach fishing he'll be doing. If he's fishing close in, of the rocks or a jetty, then paste on a small hook under a pole type float will be fine. I've seen garfish in Larnace marina and prawns or strips of squid will catch them. However, there are also Sea Bass and rays in the area. To catch them you need to fish "UK style". 12' beach caster, small multiplier type reel, 20lb line, with a shock leader of course, running ledger type rig with a 4/0 size hook baited with whole squid or half a herring (or similar). Cast anywhere upto 100 yards out - not easy without skill and practise - a sit and wait.
