Cyprus bank deposits in the spotlight
Famagusta Gazette 09.OCT.08

The Cyprus government has decided to table before the House Representatives a bill for guaranteeing bank deposits, with a minimum amount of €100,000, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis has said, underlying that the Government is trusting banks and cooperative institutions.
In statements after a meeting with high-level representatives of commercial banks and the cooperative banks, Stavrakis said that Cyprus will take measures to boost its bank system and the cooperative movement, through a common policy in all EU countries.
Announcing the decision to raise the deposit guarantee to €100.000, double the minimum level of insurance on deposits across the 27-nation bloc of €50,000, the Finance Minister said that during yesterday’s meeting, bank representatives were informed about the decisions taken during the meeting of EU Finance Ministers in Luxembourg.

Bugger :(
I'd already spread my money between two banks when I came here even before the financial crisis as it seemed a sensible thing to do ~ might have to re assess and think of a third bank or remove some and stick it under the wife's side of the mattress  .

Because I wouldn't like to cross her where money is concerned  .
The BOC tried one of their mystery charges on her bank account a while ago and she went at them like a rottweiler on steroids, not a pretty sight and they put the money back into her account in seconds  .
So I think my money is quite safe under her side of the mattress ~ even I wouldn't chance it
