| Bikers set out to realise dreams
MOTORCYCLISTS from around Cyprus yesterday gathered in Nicosia’s Eleftheria Square on the second day of a three-day charity ride covering the island.
The event, named the ‘Route of Love’, has been organised by the ‘Make A Wish’ foundation for children with cancer and aims to raise money, which goes towards realising the dreams of child cancer patients.
Speaking to reporters at yesterday’s starting point ‘Make A Wish’ chairman George Penindaex said the number of motorcyclists taking part in this year’s event had doubled compared to the last ride.
He said the sixth annual ‘Route of Love’, which covers all of Cyprus, kicked off from Strovolos municipality on Friday afternoon and covered all communities west of Nicosia.
Yesterday he said the motorists would set off from Eleftheria Square and head for Paphos where they would split off into three groups: one to go to Polis Chrysochous, the other towards Troodos and the other would go to Limassol. All riders were expected back in Nicosia at night, he added.
Penindaex said today’s drive would start off from Aglandjia municipality and head for the unoccupied districts of Famagusta and Larnaca. They are expected back in Nicosia by 8.30pm, he said.
Penindaex said during the three-day ride, the motorcyclists – accompanied by the police force’s ‘Z’ team – would stop off at towns and villages where representatives of the local authority, Church, cooperative foundations, societies, companies and members of the public would be able to make donations to authorised members of the ‘Make A Wish’ foundation.
Last year the charity drive had raised ?18,500 and this year the foundation’s goal was to exceed that amount, he said.
The ride is carried out in cooperation with motorcycles which belong to Star Centre Cyprus, Star Club, Ducati, BMW Motorrad Riders, Motoriders Larnaca, Paphos Motorcycles Club and motorcyclists from Limassol.
